An area of experimentation
New design
Saint-Étienne Métropole has chosen to make social innovation a founding pillar in the design of its public services and facilities. The resident-user is placed at the heart of the thinking and approach to design, a positioning that is unique to the region and has become a benchmark today.
More than 100 have been called on by Saint-Etienne Métropole to design its public facilities and services.
Social innovation

Banc d’essai, innovative, designer street furniture tested in the city
Initiated by Saint-Étienne Métropole as part of the Biennale International Design, the Banc d’essai test bench project is aimed at designers, industrialists and manufacturers wishing to innovate in the field of urban furniture. A veritable open-air laboratory, this competition has become a not-to-be-missed opportunity for residents to preview and test innovative street furniture following their installation in public spaces: benches, games, shelters, tables, lampposts, etc.
As a result of feedback, a large number of products with the Banc d’essai label have been permanently installed in the region and companies have been able to develop and market new products.
- The benefit for companies: test their product in real-life conditions and collect feedback from users.
- The benefit for local residents: able to vote for their favourite street furniture.

Rocking Conversation
Designed using large-format 3D printing with a robotic arm, it is made from 100% recycled plastic, which is itself recyclable. It pushes back the limits of 3D printing by incorporating advanced techniques (non-planar surfaces, 8 axes, etc.). Its shape encourages face-to-face exchanges, to the rhythm of a shared swing.

Les Anémois
This furniture combines a bench, a weather vane and a compass rose. Users are invited to interact with the compass rose to discover the origin and name of the breath of air.
Saint-Étienne Métropole
design observatory
Announced at the Assises du design conference at the end of 2019, the creation of a territorial and national design observatory meets a strategic need: to better understand the design industry and measure its impact. Two pilot areas, Saint-Étienne and Lille, have pooled their expertise to lay the foundations for this first scheme.
Co-developed with the Cité du Design, Designers +, Lille Design and the urban planning agencies of Saint-Étienne and Lille, the Observatory is based on a shared methodology and targeted surveys of businesses and professionals. Its aim is to provide reliable, up-to-the-minute data so that public policies can be managed effectively, economic players can be supported and partnerships around design can be nurtured..
